Two Wildcats qualify for state meet / Track

Oak Harbor High School juniors Ozell Jackson and Lydia Dorsey earned berths in the state 3A track meet after the first day of district competition Wednesday, May 17, at Shoreline Stadium.

Finals in four boys events and five girls events were held Wednesday. The meet will finish up at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Shoreline.

The top four finishers in each event qualify for state.

In team scoring, the Oak Harbor boys picked up 11.5 points and are in sixth place in the 14-team field. The Wildcat girls earned 12 points and are eighth.

Jackson equalled his season best of 5-10 in the high jump to place third. Race Treat of Shorecrest won with a jump of 6-0.

Dorsey improved her person record by nearly 15 feet to take third in the javelin in 116-11. Lynnwood’s Emily Smatlak won with a throw of 120-07.

In other boys finals, Andrew Miller (20-09.5) and Garren Guerrero (20-06.25) finished 6-7 in the long jump, Kyle Nickols was eighth in the high jump (5-08) and Isaac Gomez placed ninth in the shot put (43).

The Wildcats posted the best time in three preliminaries.

Chris Brown led the field in the 400 (51.98), as did the 4×100 relay team (Miller, Jordan Washington, Dorian Hardin, Taeson Hardin; 43.91) and the 4×400 team (Miguel Guzman, Jackson, Brown, Mac Nuanez; 3:31.13).

The Wildcats suffered a blow when Nuanez jumped the gun in the 400 and was disqualified. The North division champion’s slowest time this year would have placed him among the top four qualifiers at district. The junior placed 14th in the 400 at state last year.

Other Oak Harbor girls who scored points were Julie Jansen (sixth, discus, 105-06), Alexis Smith (seventh, 1,600, 5:20.99) and Jenna Cooley (eighth, long jump, 15-11.5).

In the javelin, Cami Bristow was 11th (96-07) and Samantha Hines 12th (92-11).
