Three Wolves repeat as conference champions / Tennis

Coupeville High School singles player Valen Trujillo and the doubles team of Payton Aparicio and Sage Renninger earned district tennis tournament berths by defending their conference titles at the Olympic League 1A championships Wednesday, May 10, at Chimacum.

The trio will be joined at district by singles player Fanny Deprelle and the duo of Avalon Renninger and Zoe Trujillo. Each placed fourth in the league tournament where the top four places earned district berths.

Maggie Crimmins and Kameryn St. Onge also competed for the Wolves but lost in the single-elimination first round.

District is Thursday, May 18, at Tacoma’s Sprinker Recreational Center. One singles player and one doubles team will qualify for the state tournament.

In addition to winning the Olympic League singles title the past two years, senior Valen Trujillo finished second as a sophomore.

Juniors Aparicio and Sage Renninger took third as freshman before claiming the last two titles.

Singles

Valen Trujillo won 8-0 and Deprelle 8-5 in the first round, setting up a match against each other in the semifinals. Trujillo was leading 4-3 when Deprelle retired because of dehydration. Deprelle then defaulted her next match.

Trujillo defeated Klahowya’s Hailey Sargent 6-0, 6-2 for the crown.

Doubles

Sage Renninger and Aparicio cruised to an 8-0 win in the first round, then won 6-3, 6-0 in the semis. The Coupeville pair claimed the championship over Marianne Marker and Taylor Bruce of Klahowya 6-2, 6-2.

The younger sister team of freshmen Zoe Trujillo and Avalon Renninger won in the first round 8-1 before losing to Marker and Bruce 6-0, 6-2 and to Gladys Hitt and Christine Bell of Chimacum 7-5, 4-6, 10-8.

Crimmins and St. Onge fell to Marker and Bruce 8-1.

The league tournament was originally scheduled for Thursday, May 11, then went through several changes until settling on Wednesday afternoon.
