Three Wildcats advance to Mat Classic / Girls wrestling

After winning sub-regional titles last week, Oak Harbor High School seniors Meredith Bain and Caitlin Woodworth added crowns from the Regional I Girls Wrestling Tournament in Sedro-Woolley Saturday, Feb. 11.

Bain and Woodworth scooped up state tournament berths with their wins. Teammate Wendolyn Martinez finished fourth at the regional meet and also qualified for state.

The state tournament, Mat Classic XXIX, is Friday and Saturday, Feb. 17 and 18, at the Tacoma Dome.

Unlike the boys state tournament, which divides the athletes into five classifications based on school enrollment, all of the girls, regardless of classification, are lumped into one group.

Both Bain and Woodworth qualified for state last year, with Bain picking up seventh place. She is the top-ranked wrestler at 190 pounds this season.

In the regional tournament, Woodworth (170 pounds), just like at sub-regional, won all of her matches by falls. She pinned Mount Baker’s Jada Tarvin in the second round in the title match.

Bain recorded a pair of pins before beating fifth-ranked Jacqueline Castro of Lake Washington 5-1 in the finals.

Martinez (235) lost 3-1 to Julia Blair of Everett in the bout for third and fourth places.

Oak Harbor results at the regional tournament:
