Spring prep preview / Coupeville soccer

Coming off the highest-scoring season in school history, the Coupeville High School soccer team is now aiming for a league title.

The Wolves punched in 66 goals last spring, led by junior midfielder Derek Leyva, who set a school single-season record with 24.

That effort earned Leyva the Most Valuable Player of the Olympic League award. He was joined on the all-conference first team by his cousin, junior midfielder and captain Aram Leyva.

Also returning for the Wolves are seniors goalie Dewitt Cole, defender Uriah Kastner and defender and captain Teo Keilwitz; junior midfielders James Wood and Chris Cernick; and sophomores defender Sam Wynn and forward Sage Downes.

Moving up from the junior varsity this spring are junior defender Jonathan Partida, junior goalie Simon Socha and sophomore midfielder Alex Jimenez.

Also expected to make an impact, according to coach Kyle Nelson, is newcomer sophomore defender Owen Barenburg.

Nelson lists the team’s experience as its strength, even though the core of the team will be underclassmen.

“We will start the season a little young and not with experience in all parts of the field,” Nelson said. “On the flip side, I feel we are a well-balanced team that is bringing talent to all parts of the field and should grow together throughout the season.”

Nelson’s biggest concern is defense, where the Wolves will be the most inexperienced.

“We will be looking to incorporate some new players who look to be important to our team, but it can take awhile for both the defense and the new players to fully integrate,” he said.

The goal for the season, Nelson said, “is to form a well-organized, disciplined, exciting-to-watch squad. I would like to finish with a winning record and a berth to the district playoffs.”

Coupeville finished with a 7-9-2 record, including its first playoff win since 2010, last year.

The Wolves will play in the Oak Harbor Jamboree at 5 p.m. Thursday, March 7, and then host Chimacum at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, March 9.
