Splitsville for Coupeville / Softball, baseball

Home was kinder than the road for the Coupeville High School softball and baseball teams this weekend.

The softball team topped visiting North Mason 7-3 Friday, March 23, and then fell 11-3 at Vashon Island Saturday.

The baseball team walloped North Mason 11-1 Friday and then suffered its own five-inning, 10-run loss Saturday, losing 10-0 to Vashon Island.

The softball club (2-1) plays its first of three games with Klahowya (4-1) at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, in Silverdale.

The three-game series will determine the Olympic League champion because both Chimacum and Port Townsend did not have enough players to field teams this spring.

The baseball team (0-0, 3-3) also goes to Klahowya (1-0, 2-4) Wednesday for its first conference game.

The baseball game schedule for Monday, March 26, at Sultan was rained out.

Lauren Rose’s two-run triple in the third inning got things going for the Wolves. Rose drove in Coral Caveness, who reached on an error, and Emma Mathusek, who walked.

Rose eventually scored on a passed ball to make it 3-0.

North Mason (2-5) scored two unearned runs in the fifth to get within one run, then Coupeville countered with three in its half of the inning.

Singles by Mathusek, Scout Smith and Katrina McGranahan and an error led to the three-spot.

Hope Lodell tripled in the sixth and scored on Caveness’s base hit for Coupeville’s final run.

North Mason scored once in the seventh and had runners at second and third, but McGranahan fanned two Bulldogs to snuff the rally.

Sarah Wright also had a hit for the Wolves.

McGranahan pitched a three-hitter with seven strikeouts and no earned runs to pick up the win.

“We got a lot of big hits, clutch hits,” coach Kevin McGranahan said. “The girls kept fighting and didn’t hang their heads when things went wrong. It was a good team effort; if one girl made a mistake, the next girl picked her up.”

The Wolves took advantage of a wild streak by Bulldog starter Austin Knight to score seven runs in the second inning.

Coupeville received five walks in the inning; three forced in runs and four of the walked batters scored. Hunter Smith singled in two runs and Jake Hoagland doubled in another.

Another walk and two errors led to run in the third inning, then Julian Welling doubled in a run and Dane Lucero singled in two more to finish Coupeville’s scoring.

Smith pitched a two-hitter and gave up one unearned run. He struck out two and walked none.

“Solid game all around with good pitching, solid defense and good approach at the plate,” coach Chris Smith said. “I’m am happy with our run production.”

Coach Smith praised his defense, led by two running catches in the outfield by Joey Lippo.

The Wolves scored three runs in the top of the first inning, then the offense took the rest of the day off.

After that first inning, “everything went haywire,” according to coach McGranahan. “Today our offense let us down and we paid for it.”

Coupeville’s first three batters — Rose (walk), Smith (single) and McGranahan (single) — all reached base and scored with the help of singles by Veronica Crownover and Lodell.

The Wolves had only three more hits all day, singles by Wright, Crownover and Caveness.

Vashon Island (3-3) scored twice in the first inning off starter Smith and took the lead with two runs in the third. A six-run fourth put the game away.

The Pirates (4-2) combined 10 hits with five errors in just four innings to roll by the Wolves. Five of the runs were unearned.

Meanwhile, two Vashon Island pitchers combined to limit Coupeville to three hits, singles by Lippo, Kyle Rockwell and Lucero.

Coach Smith said Vashon Island was a good opponent and reminded his club that it needs to “keeping working.”
