Spartans nip Oak Harbor in regular season finale / Swim and dive

The Stanwood High School swim and dive team went 1-2 in the final event to edge Oak Harbor 88-82 Thursday, Jan. 24, at John Vanderzicht Pool.

The Wildcats also lost a double-dual meet at home Tuesday, Jan. 22. Lake Stevens topped Oak Harbor 114-55 and Monroe beat the ‘Cats 90-79. No individual results were submitted for the meet.

Against Stanwood, Oak Harbor led 80-76 heading into the 400-meter freestyle relay, then the Spartans swept the top two spots to secure the win.

The contest was the final regular-season event for the Wildcats (3-7).

Marysville-Pilchuck will host the junior varsity championships at 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31. The meet is the last chance for swimmers to earn district qualifying times.

The district meet is Feb. 6, 8 and 9 at the Snohomish Aquatic Center.

Oak Harbor’s Micah Franklin finished first in four events in the loss to Stanwood (6-7).

Franklin won the 100-meter butterfly (1:12) and 200 individual medley (2:35.73); teamed with Aaron Martinez, Lawrence Zapanta and Rylan Quiros to capture the 200 medley relay (2:07.56); and joined Riley Pickett, Joseph Ralston and Quiros to take the 200 freestyle relay (1:54.18).

Martinez (100 backstroke, 1:19.82) and Kyto Morrow (diving, 161.35) also collected firsts for the Wildcats.
