Short-handed Wolves win / Volleyball

Competing without one of its most talented players, the Coupeville High School volleyball team overcame the absence to win 3-1 at Granite Falls Wednesday, Oct. 17.

The Wolves won 25-13, 24-26, 25-18, 25-18 without the serves of an ill Maya Toomey-Stout, one of its strongest all-around players.

“I’m proud of this group adapting and raising the level of play in order to compensate not having a key player,” coach Cory Whitmore said. “Zoe (Trujillo) did a great job filling in for Maya.”

Trujillo finished with five kills, two digs and an ace.

The win helped the Wolves (6-2, 9-2) hold on to second place in the North Sound Conference.

Coupeville rounds out the regular season with two home matches next week. The games feature the teams at both ends of the standings. First up is first-place King’s (8-0, 11-1) at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23. Last-place Sultan (0-8, 3-9) visits at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25.

In the win at Granite Falls, Scout Smith tallied 30 assists, two blocks and three aces; Emma Smith recorded 11 kills, four solo blocks and an ace; Chelsea Prescott had seven kills and six digs; Ashley Menges collected four kills and three aces; Hannah Davidson had three kills and two aces; and Emma Mathusek added 18 digs.

“Our serving was much more consistent and we did a nice job of getting Emma Smith the ball,” Whitmore said. “Scout Smith did a fantastic job of distributing the ball, and Chelsea Prescott, Emma Mathusek, Ashley Menges and Zoe did a solid job of passing the ball in order to run our offense.

“Hannah Davidson was great off one foot and had a first-set serving run that helped propel us forward.”
