A seventh-inning rally came up one run short and the Coupeville High School baseball team fell 3-2 to visiting King’s Wednesday, April 3.
Down 3-0 and with two outs and no one on in the last inning, the Wolves strung together three hits to score two runs, but it wasn’t quite enough to earn Coupeville its first win of the season.
It was a matter of missed opportunities for Coupeville. The Wolves had runners in scoring position in three other innings but couldn’t get the clutch base hit.
Two hits and an error allowed the Knights to score twice in the first inning. King’s tacked on a run in the third on three hits and an error.
Shane Losey got the Coupeville seventh-inning rally started with a double down the left-field line. Matt Hilborn followed with an infield hit and stole second.
Daniel Olson hit a grounder to the right side and beat the first baseman to the bag. On the play, Losey and Hilborn scored, the latter catching the fielder off guard and racing in all the way from second. A ground out ended the threat and game.
The Wolves received a strong pitching performance from Dane Lucero, Jonny Carlson and Cody Roberts. Lucero tossed the first five innings, Carlson went an inning and a third and Roberts finished up.
“Dane gave us a solid five,” coach Chris Smith said. “Jonny did a good job and Cody got us out of the inning.”
However, Coupeville, which has struggled on offense all season, couldn’t muster enough hits to complement the pitching effort.
Lucero led the offense with a single and double. Losey doubled, and Hilborn, Olson, Jake Pease and Bryce Payne all singled.
Coupeville (0-5, 0-9) and King’s (3-2, 4-6) finish their three-game series at 6 p.m. Friday, April 5, at Shorewood High School.
