Quick-starting Cubs take down Oak Harbor / Girls basketball

Strong starts to both halves carried the Sedro-Woolley High School girls basketball team to a 59-36 win over visiting Oak Harbor Saturday, Dec. 1.

The Cubs jumped to a 16-8 first-quarter lead, but Oak Harbor outscored Sedro-Woolley 13-11 in the second period and trailed 27-21 at the break.

The Cubs then put the game away by burying Oak Harbor 20-4 in the third quarter.

Sedro-Woolley forced 29 turnovers in the game and scored 22 points off those mistakes. The Cubs also outscored Oak Harbor 15-1 in transition points.

Forty-five of Sedro-Woolley’s 55 shots came in the key, and the Cubs out-shot Oak Harbor 42.5 percent to 30.8.

Wildcat starter Mikhaela Cortez did not play, and another starter, Payton Parks, was injured in the first period.

“We just didn’t have enough horses in the second half,” coach Jon Atkins said.

Miranda Wilson led Oak Harbor with 16 points. Parks, Emily Gouge and Madison Maxwell each had 4 points, while Sami Olson, Olivia Waite, Jasmine Ford and Rosa Simpliciano scored 2 apiece.
