Player’s health overshadows Wolves’ win / Girls basketball

Sometimes the outcome of a game isn’t the most important element of the sporting contest.

Such was the case in the Coupeville High School girls basketball team’s 53-26 win at Concrete Friday, Dec. 14. The Wolves’ Chelsea Prescott was injured during the game on a nasty fall and transported to the hospital.

She was checked out and released. Coach David King said Monday morning that Prescott is very sore and most likely will miss Coupeville’s next game: Sultan (0-1, 3-6) at home at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18.

With three minutes left in the third quarter, Prescott tangled with several Concrete players for a rebound and fell backward onto the court. Four people attended to Prescott until the ambulance arrived.

“She was checked out and headed home, to the relief of all,” King said.

The Wolves (1-0, 3-4), picking up their third win in the past four games, had little trouble defeating the winless Lions (0-7) in the non-league contest.

Lindsey Roberts scored 11 points as Coupeville raced to an 18-5 first-quarter lead.

Ema Smith and Prescott each scored 4 points in the second period as the Wolves built a 32-8 halftime lead.

Concrete hung with Coupeville in the third quarter.

“After the long delay with Chelsea, about 30 minutes, we finally saw a spark at end the quarter,” King said, and the Wolves led 44-18.

Roberts scored 9 points in the third period and finished with a career-high 24 points.

Prescott and Avalon Renninger each scored 7 points, Ema Smith 6, Scout Smith 4, Izzy Wells 3 and Nicole Laxton 2.

Kylie Clark scored 19 for Concrete.

As the game progressed, King rotated his “players in and gave many of the minutes to the swing players and non-starters.”

Prescott, Roberts, Renninger, Hannah Davidson and Tia Wurzrainer all had four rebounds.

Roberts and Ema Smith each registered five steals, Renninger and Prescott four and Davidson three.

Renninger added three assists, and Scout Smith and Ema Smith had two each.

“I am proud of how the players came out of the injury to Chelsea and refocused on the game,” King said. “We played smarter and determined from that point on.

“A good win and, more importantly, Chelsea came away without a serious injury.”
