Orcas is beached by Wolves

Ashley Ellsworth-Bagby became the first girls basketball player in school history to score a triple double

“There are a lot of rare occurrences in sports like a hat trick in hockey, hitting for the cycle in baseball and losses for the Oak Harbor wrestling team. But one thing that is more obscure than all of these is a triple double for a girls basketball player.Coupeville junior Ashley Ellsworth-Bagby became the first girls basketball player in school history to score a triple double as she amassed 10 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds to lead the Wolves to a win over Northwest A rival Orcas Island, 58-41.Along with Ellsworth-Bagby’s effort, sophomore Erica Lamb scored a season-high 15 points while junior Tracy Taylor added 12 for Coupeville. It was nice to see a scorer coming off the bench, said Coupeville head coach Greg Oldham. The Wolves (2-1, 5-6) jumped all over Orcas (0-3, 0-6) during the first quarter as they blew their opponents out of the building in every statistical category including the one that counts, as the Wolves took a 13-2 lead into the second. We broke down their defense early, said Oldham. We had one to two pass possessions instead of our usual three to four and they just couldn’t handle our preassure during the first quarter. At the close of the second quarter, Coupeville had Orcas in a 31-13 hole that their opponents had no chance of crawling out of.We changed our defense in order to keep them off balance, said Oldham. But we had a lack of focus in the second half. The Vikings managed to stay right with the Wolves during the second half in order to make the final score respectable. The Wolves outscored their opponents by only four during the second half. Most teams tend to play to the level of other teams, said Oldham. It was nice to see the team play at our level during the first half. But it’s hard to maintain focus when you’re not challenged. One bright spot for Orcas was the play of Rose Sharp, who scored the majority of her team’s points with 30. Rose is a good player and she can score, said Oldham who had coached against Sharp last year during the playoffs. The Wolves will now move on to prepare for their highly anticipated matchup at Archbishop Thomas Murphy tomorrow. ATM will be looking for pay back against Coupeville. Last season, with ATM undefeated, the Wolves managed to hand them two loses during their opponents final three games of the year.We are expecting a battle, said Oldham. They are going to be really motivated. The Wolves had the chance to prepare for ATM with their matchup last night against La Conner team. Results from Coupeville’s game against La Conner was not available at press time. Oldham says that the team was not looking past its game against La Conner but the Wolves know the meaning of their game with ATM if they want respect as a top team in their league. According to Oldham, the team has practiced a different style of defense to use against taller teams, such as the grudge match with ATM. Both Coupeville and ATM will come into Thursday’s game in similar places in the standings as when they met last year: The Wolves have just one league loss and ATM is undefeated in league play.
