Oak Harbor takes third in Purple Cup / Boys golf

The Oak Harbor High School boys golf team began the 2017 season by placing third out of four teams in the Purple Cup Thursday, March 16, at the Whidbey Golf Club.

Purple is a school color for the four teams that took part.

Lake Stevens captured first with 412 strokes, followed by Wenatchee (434), Oak Harbor (472) and Edmonds-Woodway (485) on a sunny, but windy, day.

Freshman Nick Krantz led Oak Harbor with a 10-over 82, finishing fourth overall. Wyatt Gardner of Lakes Stevens took medalist honors with a 74.

Wildcat Haven Brown tied for seventh with an 86, and Nick Whitley tied for 10th at 87.

Oak Harbor’s Ryan Evans shot 100, Mathew Boyd 117 and William Nickelson 125.

“Nick had a pretty good day,” Oak Harbor coach David Smith said. “Haven had a few bad holes but played well otherwise.

“I saw a lot of good potential out there. I think this was a good season opener and a good learning experience for the kids.”

Oak Harbor and the other Wesco North schools start conference play at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 23, at the Snohomish Golf Club.
