Oak Harbor takes 1st, Coupeville 3rd at Anacortes tournament / Baseball

The Oak Harbor High School summer baseball team took first place and Coupeville finished third at a four-team tournament in Anacortes June 16 and 17.

The Wildcats evened their summer record to 6-6 with the four wins over the weekend.

Oak Harbor went 1-3 in each of its first two tournaments earlier this summer. Those tournaments, and most that Oak Harbor will be competing in this summer, were through the Greater Seattle League. The GSL 18U tournaments generally feature select teams from across the region; each manned by the best players from several high schools.

Oak Harbor coach Cody Anderson said his players chose to face those all-star squads and their top-level pitching to better prepare for next year’s high school season.

The Wildcats have been competitive in their six losses, losing by more than three runs only once.

The Anacortes tournament was Coupeville’s first of the summer. Coach Chris Smith said his team will compete in only one other tournament this summer because of his players’ other commitments.

Oak Harbor 3, Coupeville 2 (8 innings)

The Wildcats’ toughest competition in the Anacortes tournament came from its Whidbey neighbors.

Trailing 2-0, Oak Harbor scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning and them won it on Caleb Fitzgerald’s base hit in the bottom of the eight.

Coupeville started hot, scoring a run in each of the first two innings.

Matt Hilborn led off the game by being hit by a pitch; he then stole second and scored on Hunter Smith’s single.

In the second, Jake Hoagland doubled, went to third on Gavin Knoblich’s single and stole home on a double steal.

From there, Oak Harbor pitcher Aiden McCarthy blanked the Wolves. He finished with a six-hitter, striking out nine and walking only one.

Smith, Coupeville’s starting pitcher, kept Oak Harbor off the board until the sixth when the Wildcats knotted the game. Chase Ogden doubled and Fitzgerald was hit by a pitch. Ogden eventually scored on a passed ball and Fitzgerald stole home.

Extra innings started with a runner at second base per tournament rules. In the eighth, Fitzgerald doubled in the runner with one out for the win.

Smith pitched the first six innings, giving up four hits and no walks while striking out eight.

Ogden led the Wildcats with two hits; Thomas Anderson, Joe Dixon and Fitzgerald collected the others.

Smith and Knoblich each had two hits for the Wolves. Hoagland and Nick Etzell also recorded hits.

Kloewer, Anderson and Joe Dixon all had two hits; McCarty and Taylor Rummel doubled; and Morrow and Martinez singled.

Anderson and Martinez added RBI, and Kloewer stole two bases.

Boesch picked up the win with a five-hitter.

Post 7 7, Coupeville 3

After Post 7 scored two runs in the first inning, the Wolves responded by scoring three in their half.

Coupeville, however, didn’t answer when the Bellingham team added four runs in the fourth inning and another in the sixth.

The Wolves had just three hits — singles by Etzell and Lucero and a double by Consford — in the game. All three came in the first inning, as Coupeville produced only two base runners over the final six innings.

Hilborn pitched a four-hitter but was hurt by seven walks.

Coupeville 5, Anacortes 1 (5 innings)

The Wolves bounced back from the loss to Oak Harbor to score four runs in the first inning in their win over Anacortes.
