Oak Harbor suffers tough losses on diamond / Baseball, softball

Wins have been difficult to come by for the Oak Harbor High School baseball and softball teams this spring, and nail-biting home losses Tuesday, April 11, only added to the pain.

The baseball team lost 1-0 to Stanwood while the softball squad fell 8-7 in extra innings to Lynnwood.

The two teams battled through a scoreless tie for five innings until the Spartans (3-6, 3-8) scored the game’s only run in odd fashion in the top of the sixth.

Stanwood’s Liam Shelley led off the inning by barely beating out an infield hit, then stole second. Daniel Evoy put down a sacrifice but, and Shelley, who was running on the pitch, scored all the way from second base.

Meanwhile Spartan pitcher Trey Tiffany, with seventh-inning help from Shelley, limited the Wildcats to only one hit, a fifth-inning single by James Besaw.

Tiffany struck out 13, including three in a row in the first inning after putting the first two batters on base by hitting one and walking another.

Oak Harbor starter Steven Richards “threw great,” according to co-coach Tyson VanDam.

Richards tossed a four-hitter, striking out one and walking one.

Wednesday’s game between the same two schools was rained out.

Oak Harbor (0-10, 0-12) hosts Wesco South leader Edmonds-Woodway (6-0, 6-2) at 4 p.m. Friday, April 14.

Lynnwood softball 8, Oak Harbor 7 (8 innings)

Oak Harbor scored all seven of its runs in the first two innings to lead 7-2, then did not get another hit until the eighth.

Lynnwood chipped away and tied the game with two runs in the seventh before scoring the winning run with two outs in the eighth.

After the Royals (3-3, 4-5) scored twice in the first inning, Oak Harbor countered with four in its half, all with two outs. Four walks forced in one run, then Miranda Wilson’s double cleared the bases.

The Wildcats added three runs in the second, highlighted by a two-run single by Rylee Joseph.

Down by one going into the bottom of the eighth, Wilson singled. With one out, Eleanor Tucker walked and was replaced by pinch runner Shea Davis. The runners moved up on a passed ball, putting the tying run at third and the winning run at second. Two pop-outs ended the threat.

Oak Harbor (1-7, 1-9) entertains Mountlake Terrace (5-1, 6-2) at 4 p.m. Friday, April 14.
