Oak Harbor falls to Mount Vernon 14s / Babe Ruth baseball

The Mount Vernon’s Babe Ruth team for 14-year-olds used an eight-run fifth inning to put away the visiting Oak Harbor 13s for a 15-5, five-inning win Tuesday, June 20.

The two teams wrap up their regular season when they meet at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 22, at Clover Valley Park.

Oak Harbor heads to the district tournament for 13-year-olds next week at Sedro-Woolley’s Janicki Field. The Wildcats will be joined in the tournament by the Mount Vernon and Sedro-Woolley. The teams will play a round-robin format with Oak Harbor facing Mount Vernon at 6 p.m. Monday and Sedro-Woolley at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Mount Vernon and Sedro-Woolley finish the tournament Wednesday. The top two teams earn berths in the state tournament.

Oak Harbor owns a 6-11-1 record, but most of the losses have been to teams of 14-year-olds. During the regular season, the Wildcats defeated the Mount Vernon 13s twice and split with the Sedro-Woolley 13s.

Mount Vernon 15, Oak Harbor 5

Oak Harbor scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning to cut the Diamond Dogs’ lead to 7-5, then Mount Vernon answered with eight runs in their half of the inning to collect the win.

Down 6-0, Oak Harbor scored its first run in the third inning when John Blankman walked and scored on Kaito White’s fielder’s choice.

In the Wildcat fifth, Jordan Ronning walked and scored on Blankman’s base hit. White singled in Blankman and scored on a balk. Will Rankin followed with a base hit and eventually scored on Shawn Day’s bunt

Oak Harbor had only one other base hit in the game, a single by Jamie Ryder in the second inning.

Mount Vernon took advantage of eight Oak Harbor errors to score 11 unearned runs.
