Oak Harbor drops another close contest / Girls basketball

It’s been a tough 10 days for the Oak Harbor High School girls basketball team.

The Wildcats dropped three close games during the span, the latest a 46-39 setback at Edmonds-Woodway Wednesday, Jan. 18.

Unlike the first two games when Oak Harbor faltered late, this time the Wildcats got off to an unsteady start.

The Warriors were hot early and took advantage of Oak Harbor’s troubles with a full court press to zip to a 20-8 first-quarter lead.

Oak Harbor then settled down and clawed back into the game.

“We were able to break the press and get some easy buckets in the second quarter and played great defense, limiting them to only 3 points,” Oak Harbor coach Jon Atkins said.

Edmonds-Woodway led 23-19 at halftime and 38-29 after three quarters.

“We kept getting close and had some good looks when the game was 43-39, but we couldn’t get over that final hump,” Atkins said.

The Warriors (4-3, 10-5) hit their free throws at the end to stymie Oak Harbor’s comeback.

Jordan Wood-Pina led the Wildcat attack with 11 points. Rashanna Graham had 10, Mikhaela Cortez 7, Bryn Langrock 7 and Julie Jansen 4.

“Rashanna and Mikhaela really looked to get to the rim after the first quarter, which was the difference after our sluggish start,” Atkins said.

The schedule now gets easier for Oak Harbor (0-7, 3-12). Four of the final five opponents have won four or fewer games this season. First up is Arlington (3-3, 4-10), which visits at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20.
