Nine-run inning helps Wolves whip Klahowya / Softball

A nine-run third inning made life easy for the Coupeville High School softball team in its 12-2 win over visiting Klahowya in six innings Monday, May 1.

The win put more distance between the second-place Wolves (5-2, 14-2) and the third-place Eagles (3-4, 7-5) and helped Coupeville stay within a half game of Olympic League leader Chimacum (5-1, 7-3).

Klahowya scored a run in the top of the first inning and Coupeville came back with one of its own. Katrina McGranahan reached on a fielder’s choice for the Wolves and scored when Sarah Wright’s single was followed by an error.

Klahowya scored again in the top of the third, but the lead was short-lived.

Coupeville blew open the game with its nine-run inning. Lauren Rose singled, Jae LeVine was hit by a pitch and both scored on McGranahan’s triple. Three Eagle errors mixed in with a hit batter (Tiffany Briscoe) and three singles (Veronica Crownover, Tamika Nastali and McGranahan, in her second plate appearance of the inning) led to six more runs.

In the fifth, Rose walked and scored on a passed ball.

The 10-run mercy rule came was applied with the Wolves scored in the bottom of the sixth. Crownover singled and was replaced by pinch runner Kyla Briscoe, who eventually raced home on a passed ball.

Coupeville travels to Port Townsend (0-7, 0-12) for a 3:30 p.m. game Wednesday, May 3. Thursday, the Wolves host non-league foe Sequim (8-7) in the final home game at 3:30 p.m. Coupeville goes to Sequim in the regular-season finale at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 10.

The last league game is at Chimacum at 3:30 p.m. Monday, May 8.
