Mount Vernon comes back to defeat ‘Cats / Girls basketball

The Mount Vernon High School girls basketball team nearly doubled its point total in the fourth quarter to rally for a 41-36 win in Oak Harbor Monday, Jan. 9.

The Bulldogs (4-7) trailed 29-21 heading into the fourth quarter, then erupted for 20 points to win the non-league game.

Oak Harbor, with 4 points each from Bryn Langrock and Julie Jansen, jumped to a 10-4 first-quarter lead. Rashanna Graham scored 8 points in the second period and Langrock and Jordan Wood Pina each hit three-pointers to boost the Wildcats’ lead to 25-13 at halftime.

The second half was a different story as the Wildcats went cold and the Bulldogs started hitting free throws.

Oak Harbor scored only 4 points in the third quarter but still held an 8-point lead going into the final period.

Mount Vernon drained 11 of 13 foul shot in the fourth quarter to fuel the comeback. For the game, the Bulldogs made 17 of 25. Oak Harbor was just six of 14.

Graham scored 13 points, Langrock 8, Jansen 7, Wood-Pina 5 and Samantha Hines 3.

Oak Harbor (0-4, 3-9) gets back into Wesco play when it travels to Shorecrest (4-0, 7-4) at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 13.
