Mercer Island wins Whidbey Shootout / Girls golf

The Mercer Island High School girls golf team dominated the field in the Whidbey Shootout Tuesday, March 20, at the Whidbey Golf Club.

Islanders finished first out of 18 schools with a 330, 54 shots better than runner-up Bellingham.

Host Oak Harbor used only three players (four were needed for a team score) and did not figure in the team standings.

“I have an inexperienced team with only one varsity returner,” Oak Harbor coach Andy Wesley said. “I don’t feel the other girls are ready to compete in an 18-hole match.

“I will field a full team for league matches and start getting those girls more experience.”

Mercer Island was led by Shootout medalist Gihoe Seo, who shot a five-over 77. Teammate Ella Warburg was second with a 79.

Beth Paul topped Oak Harbor with a 116, good for 46th out of 80 golfers. Danalin Metro shot a 140, and Makenna Ronning carded a 143.

Oak Harbor hosts Arlington at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 22.
