Mariner uses big first inning to beat Wildcats / Softball

A nine-run first inning ignited Mariner in an 11-5 non-league win over the visiting Oak Harbor High School softball team Thursday, March 23.

After one out in the opening inning, 10 of the next 11 batters reached base and nine scored in the Marauders’ explosive start.

Oak Harbor outscored Mariner 5-2 the rest of the way but couldn’t overcome the Marauders’ big inning.

Two errors (to Lyndsay Duchnowski and Brooke Gilham) and two walks (to Taylor Wilson and Kaitlinn Scheer) led to three Wildcat runs in the second inning.

Audrey Howard doubled and scored on Shea Davis’ hit in fifth for Oak Harbor.

The Wildcats (0-3, 0-5) added their final run in the seventh with off an error to Davis, a double by Haley Abbott and a single by Megan Flood.

Oak Harbor’s game at Marysville Getchell Friday, March 24, was postponed. A makeup date has not been set. The Wildcats host Shorecrest (2-3) at 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 28.
