Local team qualifies for national championships / Shooting

Oak Harbor’s Sabertooth Shooting Squad qualified for U.S. Army Junior Air Rifle National Championship set for Jan. 24-26 in Fort Benning, Georgia.

The team, coach by Dave Goodman, qualified for the national tournament at a meet in Puyallup Oct. 20. Sabertooth’s score ranked 29th out of 210 nationally, earning the local club its first trip to the Army Junior Championships.

Sabertooth Shooting Squad will be represented by James Lohmann, Trever Westman, Joshua Odeneal and Ivan Snyder at the match.

A fifth member, the team’s alternate, is expected to be named later, according to Goodman.

The Sabertooth team is open to anyone from seventh through the 12th grade and practices from 6:30-7:30 a.m. Tuesday through Fridays.

While most of its members are also members of the Oak Harbor High School NJROTC shooting team, participation in ROTC is not required to be on the Sabertooth team, according to Goodman.

Lohmann, Goodman noted, is not part of NJROTC this year.
