Leyva ties school record but Wolves fall / Soccer

Despite a record-setting performance by Derek Leyva, the Coupeville High School soccer team fell 5-3 at Port Townsend Friday, April 20.

The Redhawks (3-3, 3-7) moved into a tie for second place with Coupeville (3-3, 4-6-2) with the win. The two teams meet again at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, in Coupeville to determine which team will have the inside track to the No. 2 seed out of the Olympic League for the district tournament.

The Wolves defeated Port Townsend 3-1 March 27 in the first match of their three-game series.

In the match last Friday, Coupeville “failed to match (Port Townsend’s) energy and intensity, and PT seemed to get the lucky bounce,” coach Kyle Nelson said.

Leyva scored both Coupeville goals in the second half and had a hand in the third.

The two goals give Leyva 20 for the season, matching the school’s single-season record held by Leyva’s cousin, Abraham Leyva.

Coupeville trailed 2-1 half time, picking up its goal when Leyva’s throw-in caused confusion for the Redhawks and resulted in an own goal.

Port Townsend scored twice early in the second half, then Leyva struck twice to make it 4-3.

“Unfortunately, we didn’t get the equalizer but gave up one more late in the game,” Nelson said.
