Late offensive rush carries Wolves to win / Softball

It took a while, but the Coupeville High School softball team eventually got its offense going in a 13-5 win over visiting Vashon Island Saturday, March 25.

“It was tough first half of the game, then we got our timing down,” Coupeville coach Kevin McGranahan said.

The Wolves finally adjusted to the Pirates’ soft-tossing pitcher Chloe Kuyper in the fifth inning. Coupeville headed into the frame down 4-2 and without a hit.

The Wolves then sent 15 batters to the plate, scoring 11 runs with the help of six hits.

Lauren Rose started the rally by reaching on an error and Katrina McGranahan singled. Sarah Wright chased both home with a base hit to tie the game. After an out, Veronica Crownover, who was replaced by pinch runner Kyla Briscoe, and Tiffany Briscoe walked. Two scored on an error off the bat of Hope Lodell. After a walk to Tamika Nastali, Jae LeVine singled in two more.

An out later, McGranahan (who also picked up the pitching win) walked and Wright and Mikayla Elfrank stroked back-to-back triples, then Crownover doubled to finish the scoring.

Vashon scored the game’s first two runs in the third inning on two hits, a walk and an error.

Coupeville evened the game in its half of the inning. Tiffany Briscoe was hit by a pitch and Lodell reached on an error. After Robin Cedillo bunted them up, LeVine walked to load the bases. A walk to Rose forced in one run, and Katrina McGranahan’s ground out scored another.

The Pirates (3-2) scored two in the top of the fifth on a single, triple and error. Second baseman LeVine limited the damage with a double play. After snaring a ground ball, she tagged a runner heading to second and tossed to first to end the inning and threat.

Coach McGranahan liked his team’s defense, anchored by catcher Wright who threw out a runner at third and tagged another at the plate.

Coupeville’s game at North Mason Friday, March 24, was rained out. It will be made up Tuesday, April 11, at 3:30 p.m.

The Wolves (2-0) now head into Olympic League play, hosting Klahowya (0-1, 1-2) at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 29.
