King’s hands Coupeville its 1st loss / Volleyball

In a battle of unbeaten conference teams, King’s reigned 3-0 over visiting Coupeville Tuesday, Oct. 2.

The Knights (4-0, 6-1) are the defending state champions and are a constant in the state 1A tournament. Their only loss this season was to undefeated North Creek of Bothell, a 4A school.

The Wolves are a team on the rise, coming off consecutive Olympic League titles and their first state berth since 2004.

Tuesday, however, King’s flexed it muscles and handed Coupeville its first loss of 2018, 25-12, 25-13, 25-15.

“(The match) got progressively better and more competitive on our end,” Coupeville coach Cory Whitmore said. “We just let a few strings of points get away from us without coming up with our own.

“We dug the ball tenaciously, which we can be proud of, and made them earn their points. That definitely was the strongest part of our game and we received compliments for our grit.”

Emma Smith recorded five kills and two aces for the Wolves. Maya Toomey-Stout added four kills and three digs; while Emma Mathusek had four digs, Chelsea Prescott three digs and Scout Smith 12 assists.

Coupeville (3-1, 5-1) hosts Port Townsend (1-3, 1-7) in a non-conference match at 6:15 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4.
