Getchell sinks Wildcats 4-1 / Soccer

The Marysville Getchell High School soccer team scored off three free kicks on the way to a 4-1 win over Oak Harbor at Wildcat Memorial Stadium Tuesday, April 17.

The Chargers (1-7, 2-9) picked up their first Western Conference win while the Wildcats (0-9, 0-12-1) remained winless.

“We are not our record,” Oak Harbor coach Jeff Laiblin said after the match. “We have had our moments; there’s a lot of talent out there. These losses are just heartbreaking.”

Inconsistent play troubles the Wildcats, according to Laiblin.

“We had our moments of greatness wrapped around a lot of mistakes,” he said. “I told the players, ‘We have three games left, let’s have one where everything comes together.’”

Laiblin noted that his club “played strong” in the early moments of the Getchell match.

The Wildcats scored first. Nathan Merrill took a pass from Jaydon Wallace, dribbled through the Charger defense and drove home a goal.

Oak Harbor had another chance to score but missed with the goal open.

Then Oak Harbor “gave up a bad goal, and then another,” Laiblin said. The Wildcats would never recover.

Those two Charger scores came off free kicks; a third free kick score would follow.

“Three free kick goals — to do this on set pieces, it’s ouch, it just hurts,” Laiblin said.

Besides Merrill’s goal, other highlights, according to Laiblin, were the defensive efforts of Kanoa King and Ridgely Briddell.

Oak Harbor goes to Stanwood (0-7-1, 0-10-2) at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 20. The two teams opened the season with a non-league 0-0 tie March 10.
