Geffe snares WGC’s men’s championship / Golf

Doug Geffe broke Lucas Horrobin’s three-year reign as champion of the Whidbey Golf Club Mountain Mist Men’s Invitational by winning the 53rd edition of the annual event Saturday and Sunday, May 26 and 27.

Geffe took the title with a one-under-par, two-round total of 143.

Charles Flajole recorded the tournament’s best net score, 133.

“We could not have been any luckier to have such great sunshine and warm weather for this two-day tournament,” WGC head pro David Phay said. “We couldn’t have done it without our major sponsor Mountain Mist for making this annual tournament bigger and better each year.”

Doug Pierce, the 2013 champion, finished second to Geffe by one stroke in an “intense” second round, according to Phay, as each finished with a birdie on the final hole.

Horrobin appeared to be on his way to his fourth straight title when he finished the first day with the tournament’s best round of 69. Pierce came in at 70 and Geffe 71.

Geffe rallied Sunday with that day’s top score, 72, as Horrobin struggled with a 79 and finished tied for fifth.

David Acton was second to Flajole in low net with a 135.
