Despite loss to CPC, Coupeville still in playoff hunt / Football

Cedar Park Christian – Bothell clinched its first league football title in the school’s 14-year history of the sport by blanking Coupeville 42-0 Friday, Oct. 19, at Juanita High School in Kirkland.

Despite the loss — Coupeville’s fourth in four North Sound Conference games — the Wolves still have a shot at qualifying for the postseason.

The top four teams of the six-school league earn playoff berths.

If Coupeville (0-4, 3-5) wins its regular-season finale against Granite Falls (1-3, 12-7) and Sultan (1-3, 2-6) loses to Cedar Park Christian (4-0, 6-1) this week, there will be a three-way tie for fourth.

That would require a playoff among Coupeville, Granite Falls and Sultan this Saturday. The time, place and format are to be determined.

Because of the possibility of the tie-breaker Saturday, Coupeville’s game with Granite Falls was moved from Friday to Thursday, Oct. 25. The Wolves and Tigers will tangle at 7 p.m. at Mickey Clark Field.

The Eagles pulled away early, scoring twice in the first quarter and three times in the second to lead 35-0 at half time.

While the score indicates a blow-out, the Wolves did move the ball but couldn’t take advantage of its scoring opportunities.

“We made it to the red zone four times, but we just couldn’t convert any of those trips into points,” coach Marcus Carr said.

“We have a short week to get ready as we will be playing on Thursday now instead of Friday,” he added. “It will be a big night for us with it being Senior Night and having a chance to still contend for a playoff spot.

“We really need to be focused and play aggressive from start to finish. We need to have a breakout game, and now is the time to make it happen.”

In the CPC game, Coupeville quarterback Dawson Houston completed seven of 15 passes for 108 yards and an interception.

Sean Toomey-Stout caught three of those passes for 16 yards, Derek Leyva grabbed two for 47 and Dane Lucero snagged one for 32.

Toomey-Stout also rushed for 91 yards on 14 carries.

Alex Turner led the defense with 11 tackles and six sacks. Toomey-Stout added eight tackles.

Eagle quarterback Deegan Csigi hit seven of eight passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns.

“They caught us off guard with their passing attack,” Carr said.

Brandon Parish scored CPC’s final points by returning the second-half kickoff 90 yards.
