Deception Pass Sail and Power Squadron offering jamboree and boating classes

The Deception Pass Sail and Power Squadron is offering a series of boating programs this fall.

A Jamboree on the Sea

A jamboree stressing safety on the water will be held 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at the Oak Harbor Marina and Catalina Park.

A Jamboree by the Sea, sponsored by the Deception Pass Sail and Power Squadron, is a free event for families and will emphasis safety, education and awareness on Puget Sound waters.

There will be demonstrations, displays and classes from the Deception Pass Sail and Power Squadron, North Whidbey Fire and Rescue, Island Country Sheriff’s harbor division, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Sound Water Stewards, Macaroni Kid, boating safety for kids, dragon boat displays, kayaking, photo ops with the Buccaneers and free boat safety inspections.

Free hot dogs, chili and drinks will be provided.

Boater Education Card Class

Skippers can earn their Washington State Boater Education Card through America’s Boating Course set for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays, Sept. 29 and Oct 6, at the Oak Harbor Yacht Club.

This two-day, introductory, Coast Guard approved boating class will cover basic boat handling, safety considerations and requirements, federal and state equipment and nautical rules of the road.

Participants who successfully complete the course will qualify for the Washington State Boater Education Card, which is required for most boaters.

Free on-the-water training available by appointment.

The cost of the class, payable to the Deception Pass Sail and Power Squadron, is $55 per student. Spouses or partners sharing a book will pay an additional $20.

Boat Handling

A boat handling course, sponsored by the Deception Pass Sail and Power Squadron, is schedule for this fall.

The class begins Oct. 16 and will meet for two hours every Tuesday for six weeks at the Oak Harbor Methodist Church.

The class is designed to meet the needs of sailors of all experience levels, teaching practical skills and providing information for confident boat handling.

The focus of the six sessions are rules of the road, confidence in docking and undocking, boating with confidence, anchoring with assurance, emergencies and knots and line handling.

Free on-the-water training is available for students upon request.

The cost is $60 for members and $80 for non-members.

Sail Course

The class starts Oct. 18 and will meet every Thursday except Thanksgiving at the Oak Harbor First Methodist Church.

The course is designed to serve the needs of all sailors, from beginners to those with experience.

The course starts with basic sailboat designs and nomenclature, rigging, safety and sail processes. It will then tackle the physical aspects of sailing forces and techniques, sail adjustments, marlinespike, helmsmanship and handling more difficult sailing conditions, navigation rules and an introduction to heavy weather sailing.

Supplementary material will touch on sailboat racing and sailing in Canadian waters.

The cost is $60 for members and $80 for non-members.
