Cowboys clip Coupeville again / Softball

Unable to get a key hit, the Coupeville High School softball team lost 7-4 at Chimacum Friday, April 28, in a battle for first place.

It was only the second loss in 15 games this season for the Wolves; both came against Chimacum.

The Cowboys (5-1, 7-3) broke a first-place tie with the win.

Coupeville (4-2, 13-2) and Chimacum will meet again May 8.

The Wolves host Klahowya (3-3, 7-4) at 3:30 p.m. Monday, May 1.

Coupeville coach Kevin McGranahan said his team “played better than the score dictates” in the loss to Chimacum.

“We stranded nine base runner and just couldn’t get the clutch hit.”

Of the nine runners left on base, six were in scoring position.

The Wolves also hurt themselves with six errors; four of Cowboys’ runs were unearned. Coupeville out-hit Chimacum 9-7.

Coupeville pitcher Katrina McGranahan tossed the seven-hitter with three strikeouts and two walks.

The Cowboys scored once in the first inning, twice in the third and once in the fourth to go up 4-0.

Coupeville got back into the game with a three-run fifth. With two outs and no one on, walks to Tamika Nastali and Jae LeVine, a single by Lauren Rose and an error turned into the three-spot.

The Cowboys countered by scoring twice in the bottom half of the inning to go ahead 6-3, then tacked on a run in the sixth.

Coupeville scored once in the seventh. Sarah Wright reached on an error and was chased home on hits by Scout Smith and Veronica Crownover.

Crownover finished the day with three singles. Rose, McGranahan, Wright, Smith, Lodell and Nastali all added base hits.
