Coupeville’s playoff path to be determined tonight / Boys basketball

One thing is clear: Win or loss today (Saturday, Feb. 4) in the regular season finale, the Coupeville High School boys basketball team has a chance to qualify for the district tournament. The path it must take, however, is still quite fuzzy.

In a game that had no bearing on the playoff picture, the Wolves lost a non-league contest 56-40 at Sequim Thursday.

The four Olympic League 1A teams wrap up the conference schedule today. Only one, Port Townsend, is guaranteed a district berth. The other three – Coupeville, Chimacum and Klahowya – are scrapping for the final two spots.

Port Townsend, with an 8-0 league record (14-4 overall) has the conference title wrapped up. Coupeville (3-5, 3-15) is tied with Chimacum (3-5, 3-13) for second; Klahowya (2-6, 4-14) is one game back.

Coupeville plays at Port Townsend at 6 p.m. this evening. Chimacum plays at Klahowya at 7.

If Chimacum wins, it will claim the No. 2 seed and Coupeville will be No. 3, regardless of the outcome of its game with Port Townsend. (Chimacum won two of three games with the Wolves this season and holds the tie-breaker.)

If Coupeville upsets Port Townsend and Klahowya defeats Chimacum, Coupeville will earn the No. 2 seed and the Eagles will be No. 3.

If Coupeville loses and Klahowya wins, then that will create a three-way tie for second and require a special playoff to determine the second and third seeds. That playoff would be 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, in Port Townsend.

Coupeville would play Klahowya in two eight-minute quarters. The loser will be eliminated and the winner will move on to face Chimacum for two quarters to determine the second and third seeds for the district tournament. (The match-ups for the three-team playoff were determined by a coin toss.)

District begins Thursday, Feb. 9, when the No. 3 Olympic team hosts the No. 4 Nisqually League team at 7 p.m. in a loser out game. That winner advances to play at the No. 2 Nisqually team at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11, in another loser out game.

The No. 2 Olympic team hosts the No. 3 Nisqually team at 7 p.m. Feb. 11 in a loser-out game.

The winners of the Feb. 11 games move on to the double-elimination portion of the tournament.

Sequim 56, Coupeville 40

Coupeville fell behind 17-7 in the first quarter and couldn’t recover in its loss at Sequim (5-15) Thursday. Regardless, Coupeville put up a better fight than in its 72-33 loss to the same team three days earlier.

Sequim led 29-14 at halftime and 44-26 after the third period.

Hunter Smith, who drilled a trio of three-pointers in the fourth quarter, led Coupeville with 15 points. Ethan Spark also hit three three-balls and finished with 12 points. Gabe Wynn scored 7 points, and Joey Lippo, Brian Shank and Cameron Toomey-Stout each had 2.
