Coupeville wraps up league pennant / Baseball

The Coupeville High School baseball team reclaimed the Olympic League pennant with a 5-0 win at Klahowya Monday, April 30.

The Wolves won the title in 2016, its first in 25 years, and clinched another with Monday’s victory over Klahowya, the school which replaced Coupeville at the top in 2017.

Coupeville (7-1, 13-4) wraps up the regular season with a home game against Port Townsend (1-7, 1-12) at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 2.

The Wolves open district tournament play against the Nisqually League’s No. 2 team at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 8, at Charles Wright Academy.

Coupeville 5, Klahowya 0

Matt Hilborn, who blanked Chimacum a week earlier, tossed the first six and two thirds innings Monday, receiving last-out help (a strikeout) from Daniel Olson.

Hilborn allowed four hits, walked five and struck out six.

The Wolves scored in the first inning and played add-on from there.

Hunter Smith got things started when he walked with two outs, moved to second on Dane Lucero’s single and scored on an error off the bat of Jake Hoagland.

In the second inning, Gavin Knoblich walked and eventually scored on Shane Losey’s grounder.

Coupeville tacked on two runs in the fourth. Kyle Rockwell and Knoblich both reached on errors and then scored on base hits by Jacob Zettle and Hilborn.

Hoagland doubled and scored on a wild pitch in the fifth.

Smith and Hoagland had doubles in the game; while Hilborn, Joey Lippo, Lucero and Zettle all singled.

The Eagles committed six errors and allowed three unearned runs; Coupeville played errorless defense.
