Coupeville whips Wolverines / Baseball

A 9-0 win Monday, April 2, at Friday Harbor was the third straight for the Coupeville High School baseball team.

The non-league victory over the 2B Wolverines pushed the Wolves’ season record to 6-3. Coupeville faces a tougher challenge when it hosts 2A Cedarcrest at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 7, before getting back into conference action. The Red Wolves are 6-2 this season.

Coupeville 9, Friday Harbor 0

Hunter Smith pitched a five-hitter, struck out 10 and walked none in the win. Smith has 31 strikeouts and no walks in 26 innings pitched this spring.

The Wolves had only five hits in the game, with Smith and Matt Hilborn getting two each. Both drove in two runs. Dane Lucero added a double.

Four Friday Harbor pitchers combined to walk 10 Wolves.

Coupeville led only 4-0 heading into the final inning and then tacked on five runs with no hits. In the seventh, Friday Harbor walked four, hit another and committed two errors.

The Wolves scored in the first when Hilborn singled and scored on Smith’s base hit.

In the third, Hilborn and Joey Lippo walked and scored on sacrifice flies by Smith and Lucero.

Nick Etzell walked and scored on Hilborn’s hit in the fourth.
