Coupeville trims taller Seahawks / Volleyball

For the second consecutive season, the Coupeville High School volleyball team cut down Anacortes 3-1; this time the Wolves won on the road Tuesday, Sept. 17.

Anacortes is a larger school (2A) and features a taller lineup, but Coupeville wasn’t intimidated, winning 25-18, 22-25, 25-18, 25-17.

“We aren’t strangers to being the shorter of two teams on the court, but the height difference between us and Anacortes these last two seasons has been noticeable,” Coupeville coach Cory Whitmore said. “I’m really proud of the way that this team didn’t let something like taller players kill their tenacity and heart. It was important for us to start to build and develop on our identity tonight.”

A strong Coupeville service attack pushed the Seahawks’ hitters off the net, and the Wolves’ “stable defense” transitioned points their way, according to Whitmore.

Coupeville received contributions from its entire roster.

“We expect a lot from Maya Toomey-Stout, Hannah Davidson and Scout Smith, both offensively and defensively; so, for them to perform is always huge, but I was especially impressed with Chelsea Prescott, Zoe Trujillo and Maddie Vondrak’s offensive efficiency,” Whitmore said. “All three took advantage of their opportunities, and it will be big for us to establish them as offensive threats.”

Whitmore also lauded the work of Lucy Sandahl and Raven Vick, who played key roles serving and on defense.

On offense, Toomey-Stout had 13 kills, Prescott nine, Davidson eight, Trujillo eight and Vondrak seven.

Smith fired three aces; Toomey-Stout, Sandahl and Vick recorded two each; and Davidson and Prescott had one apiece.

On defense, Toomey-Stout piled up 21 digs, Emma Mathusek 15, Prescott seven and Sandahl five. Smith, Prescott and Vondrak added solo blocks.

“I’m really proud of the balanced nature of this win,” Whitmore said. “Plenty that we need to tighten up and situations we’ll need to prepare for, but this was a big team effort and a confidence booster.”

Coupeville (2-0) plays its home opener with Chimacum (2-1) at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21.
