Coupeville pounds Friday Harbor / Softball

An avalanche of offense lifted the Coupeville High School softball team to a 13-4 win at Friday Harbor Saturday, April 14.

The Wolves slashed 17 hits in the non-league win, helping Coupeville get back on track after dropping a doubleheader to Forks the previous weekend.

Coupeville (1-0, 7-3) goes to La Conner (1-3) at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 19, before jumping back into conference play when Klahowya (0-1, 5-2) visits at 4 p.m. Friday, April 20.

Sarah Wright led the offensive onslaught with five hits, including two doubles, three RBI and two runs. Veronica Crownover slugged four hits, including a pair of doubles, drove in two runs and scored another.

Coupeville opened the game with a run in the first inning. Lauren Rose singled and then was forced out on a fielder’s choice from Scout Smith. Smith scored on Wright’s double.

The Wolves added six runs in the third when their first seven batters all reached base.

Rose got aboard on an error, Smith singled, Katrina McGranahan was hit by a pitch, Wright singled, Chelsea Prescott walked, Crownover singled and Hope Lodell singled.

The Wolverines scored twice in their half of the third inning, then Coupeville went up 9-2 with two runs in the fourth. Consecutive singles by McGranahan, Wright and Prescott set up Crownover’s run-scoring double.

The Wolves ended their big day with four runs in the seventh inning. A triple by McGranahan and doubles by Wright and Crownover highlighted the uprising.

Smith, McGranahan and Lodell all finished with two hits; McGranahan, who was also the winning pitcher, drove in three runs and Smith scored three.

In addition to the big day at the plate, Coupeville played error-free ball on defense.

Shortstop Rose and outfielder Nicole Laxton led the defensive with highlight-reel diving catches.

“All in all, it was a good solid game,” coach Kevin McGranahan said. “Everybody got to play and got good experience today.”
