Coupeville overcomes mistakes to beat Braves / Football

It didn’t register very high on the attractive meter, but it did go down as a check the win column.

The Coupeville High School football team stumbled its way to a 13-0 win over visiting La Conner Friday, Sept. 27.

“We made the game tougher than it should have been,” Coupeville coach Marcus Carr said. “La Conner has a good team, but we shot ourselves in the foot with untimely penalties…We have to have better discipline. ”

Penalties wiped three touchdowns off the board, including two long punt returns by Sean Toomey-Stout.

Toomey-Stout, however, did record a trip to the end zone that wasn’t called back. He hauled in a 35-yard TD pass from Dawson Houston on Coupeville’s first play to give the Wolves an early 6-0 lead. A bad snap thwarted the PAT attempt.

From that point, Coupeville struggled to get any continuity on offense and didn’t score again until the fourth quarter when Ben Smith bulled in from 3 yards out. Daylon Houston kicked the point after.

Smith finished the day with 81 yards rushing and Andrew Martin added 30.

While the Wolves’ offense sputtered, its defense sparkled.

Coupeville held the Braves (1-3) to fewer than 100 yards and collected a trio of turnovers in the second half — fumble recovers by Dakota Eck and Scott Hilborn and an interception by Sage Downes.

“It was a nice win for us,” Carr said. “I am proud of the way our boys played, and it was nice to give the home fans a victory.”

Coupeville (2-2) heads east of the Cascades to face Kittitas (0-3) at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5.
