Coupeville opens playoffs with 10-0 win / Baseball

Bookend big innings carried the Coupeville High School baseball team to a six-inning 10-0 win over Charles Wright Academy in the district tournament Tuesday, May 8, at Tacoma’s Foss High School.

The Wolves (15-4) will play Bellevue Christian (12-6) in the district championship game at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 10, at Charles Wright. The winner advances to the state tournament. The loser meets the winner of Chimacum/Charles Wright May 12 at Curtis High School to determine the second and final berth to state.

Coupeville scored four runs in the first inning and five in the last in the win over Charles Wright.

While the offense was piling up runs, Hunter Smith pitched his third consecutive shutout. Smith tossed a four-hitter with five strikeouts and no walks. In nine appearances this spring, Smith has walked batters in only one.

Julian Welling and Jake Pease each hit a single and double and drove in two runs. Smith tripled and scored twice. Dane Lucero singled twice and had two RBI.

Joey Lippo and Nick Etzell each had one hit and scored a run.
