Coupeville grad receives college honor

Makana Stone, a Coupeville High School graduate and a sophomore on the Whitman College women’s basketball team, won the Northwest Conference’s Student-athlete of the Week honor for Dec. 3-9.

She received the award after being named the Whitworth Holiday Classic Most Valuable Player, leading Whitman (Walla Walla) to wins Dec. 8 and 9 in the tournament.

Stone topped the Blues in scoring in both games, tallying 15 in a 59-55 win over Carroll (Montana) and 14 in a 75-42 thumping of Colorado College. She also had seven rebounds.

For the season, Stone is averaging 14.3 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, helping Whitman to an 8-1 record and a No. 7 ranking in Division III.
