Coupeville goes unbeaten in league, heads to district tournament / Girls basketball

The third time was the charm — as well as the first and second.

The Coupeville High School girls basketball team completed its third consecutive undefeated conference season for its third straight Olympic League championship by defeating visiting Port Townsend 41-31 Saturday, Feb. 4.

Coupeville has yet to lose a league game — a streak of 27 — since the Olympic League 1A division was formed three years ago.

The Wolves (9-0, 15-4) are now off to the district tournament. By winning the league title, Coupeville skips to the double elimination portion of the tournament, which begins at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14, at Bellarmine Prep in Tacoma.

The Wolves will meet the survivor of Seattle Christian (13-2), Vashon Island (5-14) and Chimacum (11-9).

The tournament continues at Bellarmine Thursday, Feb. 16, and Saturday, Feb. 18. Coupeville must win two games to grab one of the two state berths.

Coupeville used a 16-2 run in the second quarter to power past stubborn Port Townsend (5-4, 10-8) Saturday.

The Redhawks jumped to a 4-0 lead, then the Wolves got on the board on a Mia Littlejohn assist to Tiffany Briscoe.

Mikayla Elfrank added 5 points with the help of a three-ball and Kailey Kellner hit from long range, and the Wolves evened the game at 10 at the end of the first quarter.

The second-quarter surge was ignited by three-pointers by Kalia Littlejohn, Elfrank and Kellner, and Coupeville was up 26-14 at the break.

Port Townsend outscored Coupeville 12-11 in the third quarter and 5-4 in the fourth but couldn’t overcome the Wolves’ second-period explosion.

“After Thursday’s game and a tough shooting night, this was a good bounce-back game for us,” coach David King. The Wolves scored only 19 points in a non-league loss to Sequim earlier in the week.

“Our play (Saturday) was on par with how we have played most of the year,” King said. “Our defense was strong most of the night, our press was effective at times. When we play defense like we can, our offense usually follows.”

It was the third straight game Coupeville allowed only 31 points, and the sixth time this season the Wolves held opponents to that number.

“A great night for our seniors,” King said. “We were able to celebrate these four players before the game, then go out and get the win.”

Seniors on the squad are Briscoe, Kellner, Lauren Grove, and manager Skyler Lawrence.

King had plenty of praise for his players.

He liked how guards Grove, Mia Littlejohn and Kalia Littlejohn led the club; Mia Littlejohn posted a season-high seven assists.

The trio also played “tough on-ball defense,” King added; Grove finished with four of the team’s 13 steals.

“Kailey had an all-around good game,” King said. The senior overcame a recent shooting slump and led the Wolves, along with Elfrank, with 11 points.

“Lindsey (Roberts) was a monster on the boards (with) 13 overall and eight on offense,” King said. Elfrank collected nine rebounds and Kellner five.

The Wolves finished with 35 rebounds, 20 on offense, and only 12 turnovers.

Roberts scored 7 points, Mia Littlejohn 5, Briscoe 4 and Kalia Littlejohn 3.
