Coupeville duo barely misses state berth / Tennis

The Coupeville High School doubles team of Payton Aparicio and Sage Renninger picked a bad year to finish second in the 1A District 3 tennis tournament Thursday, May 18, at the Sprinker Recreation Center in Tacoma.

District 3 alternates each year between receiving one or two berths in the state tournament. This is an “only one” year.

The Coupeville juniors lost the championship match, and the one state berth, to Laney Schorno and Mei Ge of Charles Wright Academy 6-4, 6-2.

Coupeville senior Valen Trujillo placed third in the singles competition, and along with Aparicio and Renninger, helped the Wolves finish second in the team standings.

CWA won the team title with 23 points; Coupeville tallied 12. Six of the eight schools in the district were represented at the district tournament.

Aparicio and Renninger opened the tournament with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Lizzie Southland and Beka Lematwa of Vashon Island. They then defeated Shining Wang and Heidi Xu of Charles Wright 7-5, 7-5 to reach the finals.

Trujillo dropped her first match 6-4, 6-1 to Lizzie Macejewski of Vashon Island. She then beat two Klahowya players, Sydney Jackson (8-3) and Hailey Sargent (8-2), to reach the match for third place. There she stopped Grace Jung of Cascade Christian 8-2.

Coupeville’s other two entries in the tournament lost two straight.

Fanny Deprelle fell to eventual singles champion Alexis Schorno of CWA 6-1, 6-0 and to Hannah Nelson of Vashon 9-8.

Avalon Renninger and Zoe Trujillo also lost to the eventual champions in the first round, falling 6-0, 6-1 to Laney Schorno and Ge. The dropped their second match 8-4 to Vashon’s Yulia Fiala and Tobin Vaughn.
