Coupeville 4, Chimacum 3

The Cowboys busted out of the chute with two runs in the first inning on an error, walk and single.

Coupeville pitcher Dane Lucero then settled in, changing speeds effectively, and allowed only one base runner through the next 11 batters to give his offense a chance to get back in the game.

The Wolves picked up their first run in the fourth inning. Clay Reilly singled, was bunted up by Kory Score and eventually scored on a pass ball.

Coupeville took the lead with a three-run fifth. Taylor Consford started the rally with a triple and scored on an error on an Ethan Marx grounder. Marx stole second and third and scored on Matt Hilborn’s ground out. Hunter Smith singled, then swiped two bases, setting up Joey Lippo’s sacrifice fly.

The Wolves held 4-2 lead into the seventh then survived a Cowboy uprising. Lucero took a three-hitter into the inning, but Chimacum started the frame with two singles. Hilborn came in relief and got two outs before a single cut the lead to 4-3. Hilborn then Induced a pop-out to end the threat.

Smith and Reilly finished with two hits, while Consford added a triple and Hilborn an infield hit.

Winner Lucero recorded two strikeouts and one walk.

“I like how we stayed in it even after giving up the two spot,” coach Chris Smith said. “We never gave up and kept etching way.”
