Coupeville blasts Braves / Baseball, softball

La Conner offered little resistance for the Coupeville High School baseball and softball teams Thursday, April 20.

The Wolves won the home non-league baseball game 19-0 in five innings and the softball game 19-9 in six innings.

The Coupeville teams will face a stiffer test Friday, April 21, when they go to Klahowya for 3:30 p.m. Olympic League games.

The Eagles (4-0, 5-3) lead the conference in baseball; the Wolves (2-1, 7-6) are in second.

The Coupeville (2-1, 9-1) holds a game edge over Klahowya (1-2, 4-3) in second place in the softball standings.

The Wolves’ offense was in high gear, but the story of the game was the pitching of Jonathan Thurston.

Thurston, making his first varsity start on the mound, tossed a two-hitter and struck out 10.

“He found the strike zone and worked from there,” coach Chris Smith said.

The Wolves scored seven runs in the first inning and never slowed down.

Dane Lucero was 3-for-4 with five RBI and three runs.

Hunter Smith, Joey Lippo, Clay Reilly and Matt Hilborn each collected two hits; and Julian Welling, Kory Score and Taylor Consford added singles. Hilborn also had three RBI.

The Wolves were helped by 12 La Conner (2-5) errors.

The Wolves spotted the Braves six runs in the first inning but rallied for nine of their own in the bottom half to take the lead for good.

La Conner (4-6) cut the gap to 11-10 in the fourth, then the Wolves pulled away.

Fifteen Coupeville walks helped the Braves hang around.

All of the Coupeville starters recorded base hits, and all but one player on the roster received at least one at bat.

Lauren Rose had three singles and a double; Katrina McGranahan rapped a triple and two singles; and Hope Lodell singled three times.

Jae LeVine added a single and double; and Mikayla Elfrank and Tiffany Briscoe hit doubles. Veronica Crownover and Tamika Nastali also had base hits.
