CHS girls win sub-district title; boys take third / Track

The Coupeville High School girls track team grabbed the team championship and the boys were one point out of second at the Olympic League 1A sub-district meet at Poulsbo Saturday, May 6.

The meet was held in conjunction with the Olympic League conference championships. In that meet, both Coupeville teams took fifth out of 11 schools, seven which are 2A.

Coupeville hosts the Olympic League junior varsity championships at 2 p.m. Monday, May 8. Next up for the varsity is the district finals May 19 and 20 in Renton.

Sub-district

Coupeville tallied 102 points in the girls meet, finishing ahead of Klahowya (93), Port Townsend (50) and Chimacum (19).

Port Townsend captured the boys meet with 93 points. Klahowya nipped the Wolves 75-74 for second, while Chimacum trailed with 19.

The top three finishers in each event are guaranteed spots in the district meet. The fourth-place times and distances will be compared with the fifth-place marks at the Nisqually League championships to determine the final entry. The Nisqually League meet is May 12 and 13.

Twelve Wolves placed fourth at sub-district. The group includes the girls 4×100 relay team (which dropped the baton Saturday), girl high jumper Cassidy Moody and boy long-jumper Jacob Martin; all entered the meet with a state top-10 mark.

Freshman Maya Toomey-Stout took part in three of the Coupeville girls five first places. She won the 100 (13.33) and 200 (27.1) and ran with Lauren Grove, Mallory Kortuem and Lindsey Roberts on the winning 4×200 relay team (1:48.62).

Skyler Lawrence won the shot put (29-02.5) and placed second in the discus (84-09). Naika Hallam took the javelin title (91-07).

On the boys side, sophomore Danny Conlisk and junior Jacob Smith each won two individual events and ran on the winning 4×400 relay team. Conlisk raced to first in the 400 (52.01) and 800 (2:11.73), and Smith won the 100 (11.6) and 200 (23.05). They joined Henry Wynn and Mitchell Carroll on the victorious 4×400 team (3:40.18).

Mitchell added a first in the triple jump (42-06), and Ariah Bepler won the high jump (5-06).

League meet

Host North Kitsap easily won both the boys and girls meets.

The Vikings captured the girls meet with 539 points; Port Angeles was second with 348. Coupeville tallied 255.

In the boys meet, North Kitsap finished more than 400 points ahead of second-place Port Townsend 718-249. Coupeville finished with 201.5.

Smith’s win in the boys 200 was the only victory for Coupeville.

Fourth, girls: Kortuem, 100, 13.55; 800, 2:44.34; Lucy Sandahl, 1,600, 5:56.31; Ja’Tarya Hoskins, 100 hurdles, 19.84; Otto, discus, 79-06; Cassidy Moody, high jump, 4-04; Zanardi, long jump, 13-08.75; 4×100 (Grove, Kortuem, Maya Toomey-Stout, Roberts), 57.26.
