Big 4th quarter helps Wolves whip La Conner / Football

Three fourth-quarter touchdowns turned a close game into a one-sided affair as the Coupeville High School football team won 33-12 at La Conner Friday, Sept. 21.

Up 14-12 heading into the final period, the Wolves erupted for three TDs to overwhelm the Braves (0-4).

“A great win for us on the road,” coach Marcus Carr said.

Now, after a solid 3-1 run through the non-league portion of their schedule, the Wolves begin North Sound Conference action when they host King’s (0-4) at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28.

Coupeville 33, La Conner 12

Second-quarter touchdown runs by Sean Toomey-Stout and Matt Hilborn helped Coupeville take the two-point lead into the fourth period.

The late Coupeville explosion featured two more scores by Toomey-Stout (the first on a 60-yard pass-and-pitch from Dawson Houston to Dane Lucero to Toomey-Stout). Houston also ran for six points.

Toomey-Stout finished the night with 145 rushing yards on 19 carries, while Hilborn added 109 on nine rushes.

Houston completed nine of 12 passes for 94 yards. Lucero caught three passes for 56 yards.

“The offense finally got rolling as we ran for 286 yards, and our defense remained stout,” Carr said. “La Conner was a good opponent and we were able to make the stops when we needed to and we were able to take advantage of their pass defense as they were geared up to stop our running attack.

“Our offensive line was able to wear them down going into the fourth.”
