Bain, Woodworth capture sub-regional titles / Girls wrestling

Oak Harbor High School seniors Meredith Bain and Caitlin Woodworth both won championships at the girls sub-regional wrestling tournament Feb. 3 and 4 at Burlington-Edison High School.

Wendolyn Martinez added a second place, and the three Wildcats qualified for the regional tournament at 10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at Sedro-Woolley High School.

The first six places at the sub-regional picked up regional berths. Oak Harbor’s Ella Erikson finished seventh and will be an alternate.

The top four finishers at the regional tournament earn state berths.

At last year’s state meet, Bain was seventh and Woodworth competed. Bain is currently ranked second among all classifications in the 190-pound class by the Washington Wrestling Report.

At last weekend’s sub-regional, Oak Harbor, with only nine wrestlers, placed ninth out of 32 teams with 99 points. Mount Baker ran away with the championship with 237 points.

Bain (190 pounds) recorded two falls before defeating Grace Himango of Nooksack Valley 9-1 in the finals.

Woodworth (170) pinned her way to the title, winning the first-place match over Mount Baker’s Jada Tarvin.

Martinez (235) won by falls in her first two matches then lost by a pin to second-ranked Jailee Mercedes of Stanwood in the title bout.
