Armstrong, Lee lead local runners in 2018 Whidbey Marathon

Oak Harbor’s Joshua Armstrong and Coupeville’s Bethany Lee were the top local finishers in the 16th annual Whidbey Island Marathon Sunday, April 22.

Seattle’s Steve Vesbach, the 2016 winner, reclaimed his crown by winning the marathon in 2:46.28.

Seattle’s Bronwyn Crossman was the highest female finisher and fourth overall in 2:59:50.

Armstrong placed 25th, 19th among men, in 3:32:50.

Lee, who also finished first among Whidbey women last year, was the 13th female to cross the finish line and took 44th overall out of 171 in 3:55.

The event also included four other races: a half marathon, a 10K, a 5K and a children’s 1K.

In all, 1,298 finished one of the three adult races.

Youssef Zirari of Vancouver, Wash., captured the half marathon in 1:11.37. Bellingham’s Katelyn Steen was the top female runner and sixth overall out of 635 runners in 1:22:21.

Aaron Novitsy of Oak Harbor took 22nd overall, 15th among men and finished first among local male runners in 1:34:10.

Oak Harbor’s Christina Wicker led local women by placing sixth among females and 17th overall in 1:29:40.

In the 10K, Michael Goldberg of Seattle claimed the top spot out of 289 in 40:31.

Nicole Coiteux of Oak Harbor placed first among females and sixth overall in 45:42.

Oak Harbor’s Anthony Prater was seventh overall and first among Whidbey men in 45:52.

Oak Harbor’s Brandon Parham was the 5K winner in a field of 203 in 19:53.

Margret Lyons of Issaquah led the women by taking sixth overall in 23:32.

Addisen Boyer of Oak Harbor was fourth among females and 10th overall in 24:36.
