Coupeville's Julia Sierra Castaño earned a trip to the state tournament by placing third in the district meet last Friday, May 21, at the University of Washington's Nordstrom Center.

Castaño was the only Coupeville entrant to pick up a win at quad-district; she will compete at the state tournament in Yakima May 28 and 29.

After a 6-0, 7-5 first-round win, Castaño lost her first match of the season 4-6, 4-6 in the semifinals. She bounced back to win 6-3, 6-3 to secure the state berth.

Coach Ken Stange said, "Julia shook off the nerves, never allowing her opponent to secure a lead."

The two Coupeville doubles teams of Jessica Riddle/Amanda d'Almeida and Jordan Akins/Jessica Blanchette dropped two matches each and were eliminated.

In the boys side of the tournament, Coupeville singles player Connor Tasoff and the doubles team of Jordan and Nathan Lamb each lost their two matches.

Stange said, "I was impressed with the effort the boys put forth in their matches."
