Tennis: 'Mixed-up' Wildcats win

Oak Harbor girls tennis coach Horace Mells mixed up his lineup and received positive results: the Wildcats defeated visiting Cascade 5-2 Tuesday, May 4.

Mells teamed up his usual third and fourth singles players, Laurin Rico and Clarissa Abadesco, into a doubles duo and the pair took first doubles 6-4, 6-4.

Kerry Rathsabanhdith, normally a doubles player, snared fourth singles 7-6(5), 6-1.

Oak Harbor also got wins from Cade O’Dell in first singles 6-3, 3-0(retired); Erin Neilon in second singles 6-2, 6-1; and Jennifer Bowers and Jennifer Fremd in second doubles 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(5).

Shannon Neilon, who has played doubles all year, lost in third singles 2-6, 1-6.

Darcy Fremd and Alexa Holmly fell in third doubles 6-4, 4-6, 1-6.

The win boosted the Wildcats’ record to 6-9; Cascade fell to 3-11.

Oak Harbor closes out the regular season Thursday, May 6, at Snohomish (10-3). The Wesco North tournament starts next Wednesday, May 12, in Arlington.
