A seventh-inning rally lifted the Coupeville baseball team to a 4-3 win over Lakewood Monday, April 26, at Sherman Field.
The win knotted the two clubs' records at 8-8 in the battle for third in the Cascade Conference. Coupeville travels to Lakewood Wednesday, April 28; the Cougars return to Coupeville Friday, April 30, at 4 p.m. to complete the series and the regular season.
Chase Griffin started the seventh inning rally with a one-out double. Ian Smith was safe on a fielders' choice when the Cougars failed to get Griffin at third on Smith's grounder to short.
J.D. Wilcox followed with a fly to right that scored Griffin to tie it. Erik King ripped a ball into the right-center field gap to score Smith all the way from first with the game-winner.
Lakewood jumped to a three-run lead. Coupeville got two back in the fifth on Smith's triple with Sean Thurman (walk) and Griffin (single) aboard.
Griffin finished 3-for-4 with two runs.
Pitcher Wilcox limited the Cougars to three hits and two earned runs while striking out seven.
Coupeville needs to win one of the next two against Lakewood to wrap up third place and a No. 2 seed in the sub-district 1A tournament.Contact Whidbey News Times Sports editor Jim Waller at firstname.lastname@example.org or 360-675-6611 ext. 5060.
