Three bad innings at the end erased the effort of four good one at the beginning as the Oak Harbor fastpitch team fell to visiting Marysville-Pilchuck 7-1 Tuesday, April 20.
Wildcat coach Jessica Weikle said,” The girls played a great game from innings one through four, but errors in the fifth and seventh innings cost five unearned runs and ultimately the game.”
The two teams were tied at 1-1 heading into the fifth, then the first-place Tomahawks (7-0, 8-2) put up four unearned runs in the inning to take over the contest.
Oak Harbor (0-7, 1-9) picked up its run in the second when Marissa Fakkema got on board on an error and scored on Kasie Brown’s double. Brown also singled for Oak Harbor’s only hits in the game.
Weikle said, “Once our defenders gain the confidence to play to their best ability, we will be able to compete longer and win some ball games.”
Emily Hunt pitched the first four innings for the Wildcats and gave up one run on just two hits. Whitney Osborn took over in the circle in the fifth and was victimized by the five errors.
The Wildcats go to Cascade (2-4, 5-5) Friday, April 23, and then play a double header against Snohomish (2-4, 3-7) at Hillcrest Elementary Monday, April 26, starting at 3 p.m.Contact Whidbey News Times Sports editor Jim Waller at firstname.lastname@example.org or 360-675-6611 ext. 5060.
