Oak Harbor High School NJROTC unit finishes second in region

The Oak Harbor High School NJROTC drill and rifle teams placed second in the overall competition standings at the regional meet Saturday, April 17, in Oak Harbor.

The second place finish is the best in 10 years for the local corps. South Kitsap finished first and Shelton third.

Of the 34 schools in the region, 27 qualified at least one team for the regional meet. At least 12 schools took part in each competition.

Oak Harbor picked up a first in the team competition from its No. 1 rifle team. James Klasky grabbed an individual first in rifle.

Other Oak Harbor team results: unarmed drill team commander (Anthony Lauerdorf), second; unarmed drill team, third; physical fitness No. 1, third; rifle team No. 2, fourth; color guard No. 1, fifth; color guard No. 2, fifth; armed drill team, eighth; and physical fitness No. 2, eighth.

Other Oak Harbor individual results: Jamie Zuber, second (out of 78 cadets), unarmed drill down; Nic Flater, third, rifle; Sarah Morical, fourth, top PT female; Josh Koorn/Chisum Sifford, fifth, individual armed exhibition drill duals; Janika Bainco, fifth, top PT female; Chel Moore, sixth, rifle; Lauersdorf, ninth, top PT male; Klasky, 10th, top PT male; and Luke Ullrich, 10th, rifle.

Oak Harbor Naval Science instructor Bill Thiel said the color guard teams began practicing before school started in September and the other drill and rifle teams began in mid-October. He said, "The 6 a.m. practices four-to-five days a week really paid off for all teams."
